Each baby’s journey is different. I will work with your family to determine the best solution for you and your and your baby. While breastfeeding is a great bonding experience with many health benefits for you and you and baby, ultimately baby’s health takes priority and in extreme situations, I recommend mixing formula and breastfeeding. I will always empower the education and information you need to make the right decision for your family.
Both IBCLC and lactation counselors help moms with establishing an optimum feeding routine with their new baby. IBCLC is an internationally accredited qualification that requires prior nursing experience, 95+ hours of lactation specific courses and 100-300 hours of clinical experience as well as passing a closed book exam. A lactation counselor’s qualifications typically require 45 to 95 hours of courses but requirements vary based on the organization. I am a nurse with further certifications in maternal newborn nursing as well as IBCLC certified.
That’s the beauty of it, I work differently depending on what your needs look like. During a typical appointment I will gather information from you about your situation ahead of time. I come to your home and work where are most comfortable in your feeding environment. I do a weighted feed (weight of the baby before and after feedings for an exact measurement of milk intake) and work with you to set up and operate your pump, as well as answer all your questions and address any concerns you might have. Appointments typically last 60 minutes, but duration is ultimately determined based on your needs.
It is important for all of your and your baby’s care team to be looped in to support and your baby. With your consent, I communicate to your child’s provider things like abnormal findings, if your baby is showing signs of poor growth, or concerns regarding infection. I also make recommendations for additional medical services such as evaluations from other specialists.
I have extensive expertise working with babies from birth through toddler ages. I can also help before your baby arrives as well as through the first feedings, and up to normal infant and developmental changes. I can also help with introducing solids, returning to work, and eventually weaning when the time is right.
As part of your in-home visit, you will have access to email and text follow up to share any questions or concerns.
For many people, your insurance will fully or partially cover lactation care. You can reach out to your insurance company for specifics or check your coverage using the lactation network. If you prefer, you can also choose to self pay. Please contact me directly for self pay options.
